Why is my iron-on patch blistering?

Before you panic, let's take a look at what can cause this type of problem. A blistering iron-on patch can be caused by several factors. Here are the most common:

1. First of all: too high a temperature

When the iron is too hot, the glue can overheat and create air bubbles under the patch. The result: blisters.

2. Next: presence of moisture in the fabric

If your fabric is still slightly damp (even barely), evaporation creates steam... and therefore blisters under the patch.

3. Furthermore: insufficient pressure

Did you iron too gently? Without pressing firmly? The glue may not have had time to adhere evenly. This lack of pressure creates loose areas. See iron-on tips on coudre-broder.com.

4. Also: poor quality glue

Low-end patches often don't adhere well. At DIPatch, we use a handcrafted textile adhesive made from DTF spray and powder, tested on dozens of surfaces.

5. Finally: fabric that is too textured or stretchy

Cotton works very well. However, with materials like stretch polyester or thick knits, the risk of blisters increases significantly.

How to avoid blisters on an iron-on patch?

Here are our home recommendations for a perfect result:

  • Wash and dry your textile Before the pose
  • Use an iron without steam, medium temperature (160-180°C)
  • Add a thin fabric between the iron and the patch (protection)
  • Press hard, without moving, for 30 seconds approximately
  • Turn the textile inside out and heat the reverse side as well.
  • Allow to cool flat before handling.

You can find our complete installation guide here.

Can you fix an iron-on patch that is already blistering?

Yes, in most cases. Here's how:

  • Place a thin cloth over the patch
  • Iron again with pressure (without steam)
  • Press down firmly on the blistered areas, then let cool flat

If this is not enough, you can add a light layer of fabric glue or lightly sew the edges to secure.
